The Art

The art for Today I Found God was created by Nathan Wondrak while Nathan was a student at Columbus College of Art and Design in Columbus, Ohio. Greg posted an ad on the school’s online job message board and over 25 artists responded, but it was Nathan who instantly showed that his unique style matched Greg’s action-packed vision for Today I Found God.

Here is a sample of one of the sketches Nathan submitted to Greg to show his playful style of illustration:

Nathan’s Submission Sketch #2

Greg lived in Ohio when he and Nathan teamed up, but a month later, Greg moved to California, so Nathan and Greg had to create the illustrations living on separate sides of the country– thank goodness for the internet!

Each page was first sketched out in pencil. After each sketch, Greg would give Nathan art notes– little things like, “Make the table bigger” or “Change the binoculars to a telescope”. It usually took about three pencil sketches to get the picture just right. Then Nathan would color the picture using a water-color painting technique called “Guash“. He would then scan everything into Photoshop and fine-tune the art so it was perfect.

Here are some samples of the Art Process for Pages 4 and 18. ENJOY!
