Do the Right Thing

Jenny loves chocolate. In fact, chocolate is Jenny’s favorite thing in the whole world… well, maybe her second favorite… but trust me, she really really loves chocolate.
One day, Jenny was walking down the street on her way to her friend, Marcy’s house. As she was humming a happy song and trying not to step on any cracks, she noticed something black and leathery on the ground. She bent over and picked it up—it was a man’s wallet. She looked inside and saw credit cards, a driver’s license, and a LOT OF MONEY.
“Wow” Jenny thought, “I could buy a bunch of chocolate with all this money.”
Then she heard a silent voice in her head: “No. That would be stealing. You need to return this wallet to the man who lost it.”
Then she heard another silent voice. It was kind of like the first voice, but what it said was very different: “No one will know if you take the money—go ahead, there isn’t anyone watching.”
Jenny looked around– no one was looking, but she knew Someone was watching her all the time… God.
She took the wallet home and then she and her father drove to the address printed on the driver’s license inside.
A man opened the door and Jenny handed him the wallet.
“Thank you” said the man. “I was worried sick about losing this.”
“You’re welcome,” Jenny said, feeling good that she had done the right thing.
You see, chocolate may be her second favorite thing, but Jenny’s favorite thing of all is following the call of God.

Learn-A-Long Lesson
Is stealing the right thing to do? How about lying? OF COURSE NOT! But how do you know they are wrong? Well… hopefully your parents taught you right from wrong, but if you’re not sure what is right or wrong you can read the Holy Bible. The Ten Commandments in Exodus 20 tell us things God says we should and shouldn’t do.
But what if you don’t have your Bible with you? How do you know what the right thing to do is?
Have you ever heard of your conscience? Your conscience is that silent voice in your head that tells you the right thing you should do. Your conscience is a gift from God. It’s one of the ways that God talks to us.
But did you notice that Jenny had a second silent voice that told her to do something wrong? That second voice was the Devil trying to trick Jenny into thinking it would be OK to steal the wallet.
So here’s a tough question– How can you tell if the silent voice in your head is God speaking to you through your conscience or if it’s the Devil trying to trick you?
You can tell the difference because God is All-Powerful, and you can be sure that the first silent voice you hear will almost always be God’s. The second (or third or fourth) is the Devil or may even be your own mind.
You should always pay attention to that first voice—the one that tells you to do the right thing—the voice of God.
“Do the Right Thing” Bible Verse
Revelation 4:1
“After these things I looked, and behold, a door standing open in heaven. And the first voice which I heard was like a trumpet speaking with me, saying, “Come up here, and I will show you things which must take place after this.”
